When Trump brazenly said that he would be ordering his red state allies to gerrymander their states to squeeze out as many more safe seats for the GOP as possible, Dems were initially caught off guard. Trump was strong and was winning. It was Dems in Disarray all over again. But then something changed. Gov. Newsom landed a breathtaking counterpunch in California that shored up a handful of vulnerable Dem seats while also wiping out 4-5 red seats. Virginia next entered the fray with a bold plan to redistrict after their elections—Democrats swept every race, and now they are on the way to eliminating up to 4 GOP-held seats. But we’re not there yet. Red states have been absolutely ruthless with their gerrymanders. And the worst may be still to come: the Supreme Court is poised to gut the Voting Rights Act, allowing MAGA to explicitly target Black and minority communities with racist gerrymanders.
