One tactic used masterfully by Donald Trump and his MAGA allies is flooding the zone. The strategy behind it is to force Democrats to fight a variety of battles on multiple fronts all at once, dividing our attention, focus, and ability to mount an effective resistance.
When Trump brazenly said that he would be ordering his red state allies to gerrymander their states to squeeze out as many more safe seats for the GOP as possible, Dems were initially caught off guard.
The insider Beltway Prophets of Doom predicted this would be the end for Democrats’ hopes to reclaim the House in 2026. Dem leaders seemed flummoxed and unsure how to respond. Trump was strong and was winning.
It was Dems in Disarray all over again.
But then something changed. Gov. Newsom landed a breathtaking counterpunch in California that shored up a handful of vulnerable Dem seats while also wiping out 4-5 red seats.
Virginia next entered the fray with a bold plan to redistrict after their elections—Democrats swept every race, and now they are on the way to eliminating up to 4 GOP-held seats.
But we’re not there yet. Red states have been absolutely ruthless with their gerrymanders. And the worst may be still to come: the Supreme Court is poised to gut the Voting Rights Act, allowing MAGA to explicitly target Black and minority communities with racist gerrymanders.
