They have heard your outcry of concern on the recent State Board of Education vote changing the curriclum guidelines on sexual topics in our schools. This Wednesday, State Representative Gina Johnsen and State Representative Jamie Thompson will be introducing legislation that will bring educational accountability and reinforce parents' rights protecting their children's innocence. This package of bills will be discussed in the House Committee on Education and Workforce, Chaired by State Representative Nancy DeBoer. Their committee needs to hear from you. Package of New Bills in the Michigan State House: "Educational Accountability and Parental Rights Act" House Bill 5363 – expands existing parental notice and opt-out protections when classroom instruction bill adds gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, sexual attraction, and consent as topics that trigger advance notice and opt-out rights. Before a pupil may be enrolled in a class covering these areas, parents or legal guardians must be notified in advance, given the opportunity to review instructional materials, and informed of their right to excuse the pupil without penalty. Position: Let the Committee know you SUPPORT this legislation. House Bill 5364 – will require legislative approval before any revisions to the State Board of Education’s recommended model core academic curriculum content standards may be implemented or enforced. Revisions could not take place unless approved by a concurrent resolution adopted by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This change ensures that major education policy decisions affecting classrooms statewide are subject to public debate, recorded votes, and accountability to parents and taxpayers, while preserving full local school board control over curriculum decisions. Position: Let the Committee know you SUPPORT this legislation. Please take action NOW: 1.ASAP - Email the Committee Clerk (
[email protected]) your written statement that you support these policies. Your statement will go on record and they will announce the positions at the committee hearing. State the House Bill numbers specifically. 2.Send an email to Speaker Matt Hall and thank him for continuing to make education a priority. He sets the agenda -- and we need to let him know we appreciate him making this topic a priority. You can also send an email to Representative Gina Johnsen and Representative Jamie Thompson thanking them for their leadership on this issue. It’s important that these leaders and legislators know you are watching, appreciate their work, and that you ACT to SUPPORT this legislation. Thank you! Remember to pass this along to your friends!
