El Dorado County Democrats focus on bi-partisan, county-wide push to address Fire Insurance Crisis
Jamie Beutler, Mike Saunders, and Lori Anzini at the August 23rd, California Democrat Party Rural Caucus meeting in San Jose, presenting Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara with the bi-partisan letter from El Dorado County leaders addressing the urgent Fire Insurance crisis.
The El Dorado County Democratic Party has been actively working on the Fire Insurance crisis since early in 2019. Through persistent engagement at the local, regional and state level, we have been able to build momentum and increase awareness of this crisis.
Over 3 million homes in California from San Diego to Yreka and everywhere in between are located within high fire risk areas. In El Dorado County, an estimated 75% of our 90,000 homes are located in high-risk areas.
Consumer-focused solutions ensuring access to affordable and protective fire insurance will require bold action and strong support across the state. Bringing this issue on the stage front and center to the Insurance Commissioner and party leaders, we can’t underscore enough how critical it is that actions are taken quickly to protect our communities. It’s bad enough that our neighbors live in fear of losing their homes in a destructive fire, fears are compounded by disappearing access to insurance coverage.
As Democrats, we defend the vulnerable, we do our part to advocate for populations in crisis, we push for regulation that protects consumers, we bring a voice to the people. California leaders must unite and do what is right to protect fire risk communities from economic devastation.
The wildfire and fire insurance crisis facing El Dorado County and the State of California, is a non-partisan issue. Josh Elder, EDC Democrats County Chair and Lauren Hernandez, Chair, Issues, Policy & Resolutions Committee, have made concerted efforts to reach out to and join with community leaders from throughout El Dorado County to address this crisis.
These efforts have led to the creation of the "El Dorado County Fire Insurance Access and Affordability Stakeholder Workgroup". This is a remarkable and historic county wide stakeholder group of organizations that realize the value of working together on this critical issue. The El Dorado County Association of Realtors, El Dorado County Chamber, El Dorado Hills Chamber, El Dorado Democratic Central Committee and County Republican Committee have joined together to find and promote solutions to the lack of affordable Homeowners Insurance.
Attached (see below) is a copy of a joint letter from the El Dorado County Fire Insurance Access and Affordability Stakeholder Workgroup that was sent to Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. Along with publishing this letter, leaders from each of these organizations voiced their support for these efforts;
“Our County Cares, we care about our land and we care about our people. Having these organizations come together to tackle this very serious issue is a tribute to our strong commitment as Stewards of the County we love and our pioneer spirit to get things done.”
Laurel Brent-Bumb, CEO El Dorado County Chamber
“ I believe that by coming together, our group can make a larger concerted effort towards finding solutions to this non-partisan issue. I look forward to working on this team and helping secure a better future for this special place we call " Home."
Debra Miller, President, El Dorado County Association of Realtors
"I see our diverse perspectives as an added value when faced with tackling such a complex issue. I am proud that we could serve a role in bringing this group together. Too much is at stake, livelihoods are being threatened. Our united voice is essential to informing policy makers at all levels, stressing the need for urgent action to ensure access to affordable and protective fire insurance."
"Our El Dorado County Democratic Party will continue to push for outreach to consumers, data transparency, and collaboration with frontline communities."
Joshua Elder, Chair El Dorado County Democratic Party
"Partisan politics are not necessary when advocating for forest management and affordable homeowners insurance for our beautiful community. The El Dorado County Republican Party is pleased to work with the El Dorado County Democrat Party, business leaders, and community leaders to ensure that our neighbors can insure their homes."
Todd White, Chair Republican Central Committee
Edward Everett Hale said it best, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” We look forward to the journey in helping to find reasonable solutions and compromises for all stakeholders.
Debbie Manning, President-CEO El Dorado Hills Chamber
