El Dorado County Democrats focus on bi-partisan, county-wide push to address Fire Insurance Crisis

The El Dorado County Democratic Party has been actively working on the Fire Insurance crisis since early in 2019. Through persistent engagement at the local, regional and state level, we have been able to build momentum and increase awareness of this crisis. 

Over 3 million homes in California from San Diego to Yreka and everywhere in between are located within high fire risk areas. In El Dorado County, an estimated 75% of our 90,000 homes are located in high-risk areas. 

Consumer-focused solutions ensuring access to affordable and protective fire insurance will require bold action and strong support across the state. Bringing this issue on the stage front and center to the Insurance Commissioner and party leaders, we can’t underscore enough how critical it is that actions are taken quickly to protect our communities. It’s bad enough that our neighbors live in fear of losing their homes in a destructive fire, fears are compounded by disappearing access to insurance coverage. 

As Democrats, we defend the vulnerable, we do our part to advocate for populations in crisis, we push for regulation that protects consumers, we bring a voice to the people. California leaders must unite and do what is right to protect fire risk communities from economic devastation. 

The wildfire and fire insurance crisis facing El Dorado County and the State of California, is a non-partisan issue.  Josh Elder, EDC Democrats County Chair and Lauren Hernandez, Chair, Issues, Policy & Resolutions Committee, have made concerted efforts to reach out to and join with community leaders from throughout El Dorado County to address this crisis. 

These efforts have led to the creation of the "El Dorado County Fire Insurance Access and Affordability Stakeholder Workgroup".  This is a remarkable and historic county wide stakeholder group of organizations that realize the value of working together on this critical issue. The El Dorado County Association of Realtors, El Dorado County Chamber, El Dorado Hills Chamber, El Dorado Democratic Central Committee and County Republican Committee have joined together to find and promote solutions to the lack of affordable Homeowners Insurance.

Attached (see below) is a copy of a joint letter from the El Dorado County Fire Insurance Access and Affordability Stakeholder Workgroup that was sent to Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara.  Along with publishing this letter, leaders from each of these organizations voiced their support for these efforts;

How are elected leaders working to address homelessness in El Dorado County?

Find out at a Joint Special meeting of the EDC Board of Supervisors, Placerville City Council, and South Lake Tahoe City Council on Friday, September 6, 2019 beginning at 1:00 P.M. at the EDC Fair Grounds in the Organ Room (100 Placerville Dr., Placerville). The meeting will feature a presentation on the results of the Point in Time Count conducted by Home Base   https://www.homebaseccc.org/, including:
  • Results of the CoC Point in Time Count (homeless census conducted in January);
  • Discuss the County's survey results and some implications of what they mean;
  • Provide an update on where the Continuum of Care (CoC) was, is now, and on going (including upcoming funding opportunities), and;
  • Set the stage for the upcoming development of the 5-year strategic plan, likely to begin sometime around October-November. 
 No action will be taken by any of the governing bodies at this meeting.  All interested El Dorado County residents are invited and encouraged to attend.
