[link removed] [[link removed]] John,Last week, Donald Trump gave a long interview [[link removed]] to the New York Times, where he made some appalling statements I wanted to respond to. First of all, when asked about his invasion of Venezuela and any limits power to invade or coerce other countries, he brushed off international law and the very idea of accountability, saying:

“Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

America’s founders would certainly take issue with that. In a democracy, no one is above the law, not even the president.

As Thomas Paine wrote in 1776 in Common Sense, “in America the law is king. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other.”

The Trump administration’s actions in Venezuela and their response to the ICE killing in Minneapolis and shootings in Oregon show that they believe themselves to be above the law and accountability. That is both anti-democratic and incredibly dangerous.

Congress must demand transparency and hold those in power accountable before more lives are put at risk.

For too long, Trump has been rewarded for his reckless disregard for the Constitution. And it’s clear he only feels more unrestrained during this presidency.

When asked about his family’s expanding foreign business interests that Trump himself still profits from, Trump said:

“I found out that nobody cared, and I’m allowed to.”

John, that attitude is exactly the problem.

I believe the American people do care if the president and his family make hundreds of millions through foreign business projects and corrupt cryptocurrency schemes. Especially when that means their interests are not put first.

It’s up to Congress and the American people to show Trump that he’s wrong: Trump’s lawlessness—in its many forms from foreign invasions, to federal overreach, to personal profiteering—will not go unanswered.Accountability matters, and CREW will do everything we can to demand it and bring Trump’s lawlessness into the light.
