John,
We are in the middle of the worst economic crisis in generations. Tens of
millions of Americans across the country are out of work and relying on
expanded unemployment benefits to survive each week. Nearly 52 million
people have filed for unemployment in the past 15 weeks.
But instead of providing more help to people struggling all across the
country, Republicans in Congress are set to let the expanded unemployment
benefits provided by the CARES Act expire next week. This change comes at
a time when nearly 23 million Americans don’t believe they will be able to
pay their August rent or mortgage.
We need Democrats in Congress to stand strong and pass new legislation to
help the millions of people struggling all across the country. That starts
with extending expanded unemployment benefits.

If we let Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress get their way, these
crucial benefits will expire and the millions of people put out of work by
the pandemic will be left to fend for themselves with hundreds of dollars
less in their pockets each week.
Mitch McConnell even laughed when a reporter asked him if the Senate would
pass a new stimulus bill before these crucial benefits expire.
The fact that millions of Americans are out of work and struggling to get
by isn’t funny -- it’s a catastrophic failure of leadership.
That’s why Democrats in Congress have to get up and fight right now.
