Dear John,

My name is David Lien. I’m a veteran, an author, and an outdoorsman.

On Veterans Day this year, I found myself hunting whitetails in northern Minnesota. Not on private fields — but out in the vast expanse of public lands that we all share: the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the surrounding Superior National Forest, wildlife management areas, state parks, scenic rivers, and more.

The Boundary Waters is where I go to paddle, to hunt, and to hike. It’s where I go to feel free. It doesn’t care who you vote for or what’s in your bank account. It belongs to all of us.

Today, our public lands in Minnesota and across the country are being put at risk. Foreign mining billionaires are still trying to put a copper‑ore sulfide mine upstream from the Boundary Waters . This dangerous form of mining is known to destroy watersheds .

In fact, there are no examples of sulfide mines in water-rich areas that have not polluted.

That’s why today, I’m asking you to join me in making a gift to the organization that is leading the fight to speak loudly for this quiet place, Save the Boundary Waters. And right now, every dollar is doubled if you give before December 31.

Veterans, perhaps better than most, understand that our public lands and waters are inextricably linked to our freedom and democracy. Lose one, and we risk losing both. Since our great nation was formed, public lands have been jointly owned and protected by every citizen.

In a time marked by deep division, one truth still stands clear: the Boundary Waters unites us. Out there, we’re just Americans—sharing clean water, quiet campsites, and a wild place that reminds us who we are and what really matters.

That kind of freedom isn’t guaranteed. And right now, it’s under attack. If we lose the Boundary Waters, we lose a freedom that can never be replaced.

Join me in standing with Save the Boundary Waters.

Please make a tax-deductible gift today and help us keep the Boundary Waters wild, free, and forever protected. >> [[link removed]]

P.S. As a veteran, I understand that our public lands are inextricably linked to our freedom. If we lose one, we'll likely lose both. Please make your matched gift before midnight December 31 to keep the Boundary Waters wild and free for all people, for all time. >> [[link removed]]
