Abolition Is Not Complicated.

It’s About Meeting Basic Needs.

As government food assistance faced delays and cuts this November, DPN community members came to us with an urgent message: they were facing food insecurity.

We sprung to action, sending outreach to 100+ DPN members to identify their specific needs and preferences. Over 50 responses came in with members sharing additional needs such as hygiene products, laundry detergent, diapers, and more. We got to work immediately, reaching out to partners across Los Angeles, seeking donations and sourcing items based on what our community told us they needed.

Our friends at National Bail Out supported via their Food Freedom Fund, and we were able to go above and beyond meeting the DPN family and community requests.

On December 13th, over 50 community members showed up in person. Each family walked away with 4 curated bags (produce, non-perishables, hygiene products, and household items) plus a $100 Visa gift card just in time for the holidays. These tangible resources were an act of solidarity, not charity. The same people receiving items are the ones who support others in the community and campaigns every week.

We did it because our people needed us.
But we can't do it alone.

This year has been hard on everyone. Our mutual aid program, which serves system-impacted individuals and their families has run consistently for five years. Unfortunately, this year we were forced to make adjustments to this program due to funding constraints. Federal policy shifts have made many organizations hesitant or unable to fund community-based work like ours. When traditional funding streams may waver, direct community support becomes vital to our work.

Our team went all hands on deck to organize this distribution in less than a month. Imagine what we could do with more funding, partners, and resources.

Your donation helps us provide relief while we navigate an increasingly hostile funding landscape. Every dollar goes directly to system-impacted families facing food insecurity, formerly incarcerated individuals receiving digital skills training, and alleviating the burden of incarceration with financial assistance.
