Dear Friends,
710 journalists spent time in prison this year, and more than 500 will be spending the end-of-year holidays there too, according to our latest figures.
Today, China, Russia, Myanmar, and Belarus are the world’s largest prisons for journalists. These countries are extremely hostile environments for the press, with record numbers of news professionals detained, missing, and held hostage.
Every single day, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) works to secure their immediate release. Journalists should never be imprisoned simply for doing their job. Your support is essential in the fight to defend journalists and uphold everyone’s right to independent, and reliable news.

We’re talking about over five hundred people stripped of their freedom, over five hundred shattered lives. Among them is the outrageous case of Christophe Gleizes, a French sports journalist thrown behind bars in Algeria for reporting on a local football team. He’s preparing to spend his first Christmas in prison, as the court decided to uphold his seven-year sentence after his appeal trial on December 3rd 2025. Unless his sentence is overturned, he’ll be spending the next seven holiday seasons behind bars as well.
We’re also deeply concerned about Pham Doan Trang, the Vietnamese journalist unjustly imprisoned for five years, and Sevinj Vagifgizi, an Azerbaijani journalist, who will be spending her second holiday season behind bars. Unless things change, Sevinj will have to face the next nine New Year’s celebrations in prison, too…
Together, let’s continue to support those who risk their freedom — and even their lives — to keep us informed.
Thank you for your generosity.
Pierre Haski, President of Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
