Dear friend,
“Food sovereignty is not just resistance, it is creation.”
That is how the US Food Sovereignty Alliance and Climate Justice Alliance – which Grassroots International is honored to both support and participate in – described the work of the winners of this year’s Food Sovereignty Prize.
Thanks to your support [[link removed]] , we’ve been able to accompany the Food Sovereignty Prize process in uplifting how organizations like Association Nourrir Sans Détruire (ANSD), one of this year’s winners, exemplify the possibilities created with food sovereignty.
Since 2011, ANSD, whose name translates to ‘Nourish without Destroying’ Association, has organized thousands of rural women and farmers to restore land, biodiversity, and livelihoods, transforming one quarter of eastern Burkina Faso’s farmland in the process.

Image Description: A flyer featuring the logos of US Food Sovereignty Alliance, Food Sovereignty Prize, and Climate Justice Alliance with the text “Honoring Association Nourrir Sans Detruire (ANSD) Burkina Faso” on the left and “Dec 3 11 am PST | 2 pm EST | [[link removed]] tinyurl.com/register2025FSP” on the bottom. A photo on the right side of the flyer features a woman wearing a colorful patterned headscarf, waistband, and skirt along with a pink t-shirt holding a bunch of crops while standing in a field of crops with a few trees in the background. Below the photo is the credit: Groundswell International. On the bottom left of the flyer is an illustration of a tree with 2 fruits hanging. The background of a flyer is gray with purple swirls throughout and a green circle on the top right corner.
A recent study from ANSD showed that farmers who had adopted the most advanced agroecological systems had 4.4x higher yields compared to farmers using no agroecological practices. Some of those agroecological practices include no residue burning, cereal-legume intercropping, and low-till.
Furthermore, farming households practicing advanced agroecology earned 40% more than the living income benchmark for rural Burkina Faso.
Grassroots International is proud to accompany the critical work of the Food Sovereignty Prize in uplifting these grassroots solutions to poverty, hunger, and the climate crisis, as an alternative to the technological fixes promoted by the World Food Prize.

Boa, Grassroots International Solidarity Program Officer for West Africa and Haiti, who emceed this year’s Food Sovereignty Prize ceremony, shared,
The Food Sovereignty Prize being awarded today in essence tells the world that alternatives exist that ensure healthy food systems, land and territory rights, and social justice are being built daily by small-scale food producers such as Indigenous Peoples, peasants, pastoralists and fisherfolk across the world. These alternatives are epitomized by the work of our honorees.
As our grantee allies who co-sponsor the Prize, US Food Sovereignty Alliance and Climate Justice Alliance, shared.
Like networks of mycelium growing in the dark, collective power nourishes life and inspires transformation from the ground up.
Will you join our network of mycelium to nourish life?
