“Food sovereignty is not just resistance, it is creation.”
That is how the US Food Sovereignty Alliance and Climate Justice Alliance – which Grassroots International is honored to both support and participate in – described the work of the winners of this year’s Food Sovereignty Prize.
Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to accompany the Food Sovereignty Prize process in uplifting how organizations like Association Nourrir Sans Détruire (ANSD), one of this year’s winners, exemplify the possibilities created with food sovereignty. Since 2011, ANSD, whose name translates to ‘Nourish without Destroying’ Association, has organized thousands of rural women and farmers to restore land, biodiversity, and livelihoods, transforming one quarter of eastern Burkina Faso’s farmland in the process. |

A recent study from ANSD showed that farmers who had adopted the most advanced agroecological systems had 4.4x higher yields compared to farmers using no agroecological practices. Some of those agroecological practices include no residue burning, cereal-legume intercropping, and low-till.
Furthermore, farming households practicing advanced agroecology earned 40% more than the living income benchmark for rural Burkina Faso.
Grassroots International is proud to accompany the critical work of the Food Sovereignty Prize in uplifting these grassroots solutions to poverty, hunger, and the climate crisis, as an alternative to the technological fixes promoted by the World Food Prize. |
