Marvin's Story

Marvin was 16 when he became a father and dropped out of high school to support his partner and child. Still, he knew he wouldn’t get far without a degree, so he came to Identity’s Youth Opportunity Center for GED classes. But he got so much more. Identity staff helped him with baby supplies and parenting classes while he was studying. Being with his GED classmates also provided something he desperately needed—space to be a teenager.

But his responsibilities were about to multiply. A few months after the birth of his daughter, Marvin’s dad died suddenly. Now thrust into the role of provider for his mother and 11-year-old sister as well, he took on more work hours and Identity helped make sure there was enough food for the family, clothing for his sister and other essentials. Through it all, Marvin kept showing up to GED class.

One day, Identity’s workforce specialist visited his class to share career opportunities in the automobile industry through a partnership with Chevy Chase Acura. Marvin, who has always loved cars, lit up. The specialist helped him prepare for an upcoming job fair at Identity—building a new résumé and practicing interview skills. That evening, Marvin's Case Manager stood by his side, even teaching him how to tie a tie before he walked into the room.
Marvin’s story, drive and passion so impressed the Acura recruiter that he invited Marvin for a second interview and offered a job that day. Because Marvin was still so young, he started working part-time until he could obtain his driver’s license. Now 18, Marvin is working at Chevy Chase Acura full time and attending GED classes, working hard on his goals to be a good provider and a great father.
