John, When I joined the Navy in 2015, they had a slogan that reflected peace achieved not by threats, violence, and death, but through real strength: “A Global Force for Good.” I truly believe that the United States, and particularly the U.S. Navy is, and has been, a “global force for good.” But right now, dangerous right wing extremists are turning that slogan on its head. Donald Trump and so-called Secretary of “War” Pete Hegseth are making America look weak by killing noncombatants, blowing up fishing boats allegedly running drugs in international waters, and threatening Venezuela with top-down regime change. All of this is being done behind the smokescreen of disrupting the flow of illicit drugs. But the real reason is much more sinister, and corrupt: Venezuela is sitting on billions of dollars worth of oil reserves and the Trump Administration wants to seize it. We’ve seen this movie before, and it ends badly.
