This week’s Bird Word:
Advocacy

At NVBA, advocacy is a big part of our mission. To advocate is to support or speak on behalf of a person, cause or group ([link removed]) to promote change - essentially using your voice to ensure that needs are heard. NVBA speaks up on behalf of birds, wildlife and habitat in northern Virginia - but how? And to whom? We are having a “Week of Advocacy” featuring several events to help our community understand just that! Keep reading below to find out how you can join us and learn how to be a great advocate for birds.

* NVBA’s Week of Advocacy:
+ On Tuesday, 12/16, we are teaming up with Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy to present a virtual discussion with Delegate Kathy Tran ([link removed]) , Representative for Virginia District 18 and Majority Caucus Chair for the Virginia House of Delegates, on effective advocacy in Virginia. Delegate Tran will provide advice on how to advocate before the General Assembly and local governments, making your efforts to lobby elected officials more effective. This is a great opportunity to learn about how to effectively enact legislation that supports and protects the environment.
+ On Friday, 12/19, we’re holding a virtual discussion and “advocacy power-hour” ([link removed]) to write and submit comments regarding proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act. Join us to help make a difference - no experience required!
* Questions about feeding the birds this winter? Our free Winter Bird Feeding Workshop ([link removed]) recording can provide some answers!
* Let’s go birding: Join us for a bird identification workshop ([link removed]) at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday! This ID workshop will be held indoors, followed by a short outdoor walk to try out your new skills. All are welcome!
* Last day to order calendars for the holidays: Order your 2026 NVBA photo calendar! ([link removed]) Order TODAY for USPS shipping by Christmas; order by TUESDAY for in-office pickup from 11-3 in Reston. Order any time if you don’t need it for the holidays! All calendar sales directly support our conservation work.
* We need your help: Check out our volunteer page ([link removed]) for all the different ways you can lend a hand! From pulling invasives to helping with tabling events and counting birds and insects, there’s something for everyone.

See you out there,
Northern Virginia Bird Alliance
