Dear John

As the Burmese military bomb another hospital, killing 30 people and injuring many more, the British government is under growing pressure to resume sanctions and other actions against the Burmese military.

UN Special Rapporteur visits UK, calls for action

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Myanmar is a position created by the UN for someone to report on human rights violations and make recommendations for what the international community should do. The current Special Rapporteur, Tom Andrews, made an official visit to the UK last week and has highlighted how the UK has not brought in any new sanctions for more than a year.

What should the British government do about Burma? – New Briefing Paper

We have published a new briefing paper detailing all the things the British government can and should be doing about the crisis in Burma, ranging from new targeted sanctions, increased aid to people fleeing attacks, support for demining, and kicking out an officer of the Burmese military, who they allow to live in a luxury home in Wimbledon, South London.

Sham election begins on 28^th December

In the coming days you will likely start to see Burma in the news again, as the Burmese military prepare for sham elections beginning on 28^th December. The election isn’t real, with dozens of political parties banned, including the National League for Democracy, which wins every national election it stands in.

The election is nothing more than a rebranding exercise, designed to preserve military power at a time when they are fighting for their survival.

Our briefing paper, ‘The Burmese Military’s ‘Elections’: New Date, New Danger, Same Sham’ explains what is going on and why. You can read it here ([link removed]) .
