Sham election begins on 28th December
In the coming days you will likely start to see Burma in the news again, as the Burmese military prepare for sham elections beginning on 28th December. The election isn’t real, with dozens of political parties banned, including the National League for Democracy, which wins every national election it stands in.
The election is nothing more than a rebranding exercise, designed to preserve military power at a time when they are fighting for their survival.
Our briefing paper, ‘The Burmese Military’s ‘Elections’: New Date, New Danger, Same Sham’ explains what is going on and why. You can read it here.
