As required under state law, Florida’s Department of Education just reported
that about 400 books were removed (full list here

) from classrooms and libraries during the 2024–25 school year.

These bans happened because of a single rule: if one parent or guardian files
an objection in that district, the school board must respond — and
extremist-controlled boards are interpreting that as permission to pull books
off shelves immediately.

Because of one complaint, hundreds of children lose access to books.

JOHN, there is one silver lining: in August, a judge ruled that part of the
law that makes this complaint process possible, HB1069, is “overbroad and
unconstitutional.”
