** Dear John,
------------------------------------------------------------

It’s true: Sometimes our democracy feels hopelessly stuck. It’s only natural to sometimes despair over how we escape this broken, polarized moment.

But let me say this: I have spent the last decade chronicling gerrymandering and the fight for meaningful electoral reform. Despite very real challenges – from the courts to the politicians driving this year’s unprecedented mid-decade redistricting – I’ve never felt more confident that the change we so desperately need is on the horizon.

We can seize this moment – but we need your help.

Great crisis begets great opportunity. This is the moment for the Fair Representation Act ([link removed]) . Growing numbers of thought leaders and Americans nationwide have come to understand that we will never escape the gerrymandering armageddon and return power to voters until we move beyond our current system of single-member districts.

A more proportional U.S. House – elected from larger, multi-member districts with ranked choice voting – has long been FairVote’s gold standard. Well, sometimes the window for change opens suddenly. Make no mistake: As Democrats and Republicans design a maximally gerrymandered map nationwide, and the Supreme Court threatens the future of majority-minority seats across the South, that window has arrived.

Americans want politics to work again. They want leaders who actually seek to solve problems. And they want to be able to hold those leaders accountable in elections that actually matter – rather than a system where just three dozen of 435 seats are truly competitive.

A sample of headlines on this year’s ‘gerrymandering armageddon’

None of this will be easy. As I wrote in The Atlantic ([link removed]) this week, there’s a long history of efforts to limit voting rights and push back against fair representation. That’s why change this big requires all of us.

Together, we can do this. We can end gerrymandering. We can create a nation where every district is a swing district. Where all of us feel represented, everywhere, whether Democrats in Tennessee, Republicans in New England, or voters of color nationwide. We can capitalize on this tremendous desire for change.

But we cannot do it without you. Let’s dream big about the democracy that awaits us. Please fund this ambitious, essential work with a generous gift today. It’s an honor to be on this path toward a better nation alongside you.

With thanks,

David Daley

Senior Fellow
