Neghat
A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

As nights draw in, the festive season across Nottingham is now in full swing. With the Panto at the Theatre, Winter Wonderland at Old Market Square or the Fairytale Christmas at Newstead Abbey, there is lots to take in. Last week, I had a chance to watch Cinderella at the Theatre Royal and Concert Hall and walked through the Wollaton Winter Light Trail, these are fantastic opportunities to take in some magical Christmas spirit and both are worth a visit so get your tickets whilst you can. This week it was great to see that new plans for the expansion of Nottingham Forest’s stadium unveiled with plans to increase capacity to over 50,000. This is great for Nottingham and our proud sporting heritage. This expansion paves the way for Nottingham being a host city for the Women’s World Cup – and we all know what happened the last time England hosted a world cup in 1966!

Help us bring hope this Christmas - Donate to hampers for young people leaving care
Help us bring hope this Christmas - Donate to hampers for young people leaving care

For most of us, Christmas is a time filled with warmth, family, and celebration, but for many young people leaving the care system, it can be a stark reminder of what they don’t have - no family to visit, no home-cooked meals, and no presents under the tree (if they have a tree). It can be lonely and overwhelming.

This year, we want to remind them that they’re not alone – which is why, led by Cllr Cheryl Barnard, we’re putting together Christmas hampers filled with gifts, treats, and everyday essentials to bring comfort and joy during the festive season. It’s a small but meaningful way to show these young adults that their community cares about them and believes in their future.

Workplaces, schools, and community groups can also get involved by hosting collection drives or sponsoring hampers — a wonderful way to share kindness as a team.

Your donation could be the difference between a lonely Christmas and one filled with hope.
