A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan
As nights draw in, the festive season across Nottingham is now in full swing. With the Panto at the Theatre, Winter Wonderland at Old Market Square or the Fairytale Christmas at Newstead Abbey, there is lots to take in. Last week, I had a chance to watch Cinderella at the Theatre Royal and Concert Hall and walked through the Wollaton Winter Light Trail, these are fantastic opportunities to take in some magical Christmas spirit and both are worth a visit so get your tickets whilst you can. This week it was great to see that new plans for the expansion of Nottingham Forest’s stadium unveiled with plans to increase capacity to over 50,000. This is great for Nottingham and our proud sporting heritage. This expansion paves the way for Nottingham being a host city for the Women’s World Cup – and we all know what happened the last time England hosted a world cup in 1966!

Over the past three months, the Love Your City Centre campaign has continued to deliver strong results across Nottingham.
During this period, teams have carried out thousands of investigations and patrols, tackling fly-tipping and graffiti, reducing waste contamination, removing significant amounts of waste and responding quickly to issues raised by citizens. Key achievements include:
-
Almost 700 graffiti investigations and removals
-
Over 2,600 hours of clean-up activity
-
More than 855 tonnes of fly-tipped waste removed
-
Almost 2,400 patrols, including high-visibility and transport network patrols
As we move into winter, the focus remains on maintaining momentum, supporting neighbourhoods and continuing to create cleaner, safer spaces across the city. The final Day of Action of 2025 will take place in December, with teams once again targeting hotspot areas for enhanced cleaning and patrols.

Nottingham City Council is proud to support the launch of Safe Space Notts, a new partnership website designed to make it easier for residents and visitors to identify accredited Safe Spaces across the city centre. The site has been developed by It’s in Nottingham and the Consent Coalition, alongside Nottinghamshire Police and the Nottinghamshire Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner, to strengthen Nottingham’s collective effort to tackle violence against women and girls and improve public safety.
The new website brings all accredited Safe Spaces together in one accessible platform, helping people navigate the city centre with confidence and find support quickly if they need it. Key features include:
-
An interactive map of accredited Safe Spaces
-
Awareness and guidance for the public
-
Specialist VAWG resources and training
-
Improved visibility and consistency across city centre venues
More than 65 venues have already signed up to the Safe Space Pledge, taking simple but meaningful steps to offer safe, welcoming spaces where trained staff can provide reassurance and help direct people to support.
For most of us, Christmas is a time filled with warmth, family, and celebration, but for many young people leaving the care system, it can be a stark reminder of what they don’t have - no family to visit, no home-cooked meals, and no presents under the tree (if they have a tree). It can be lonely and overwhelming.
This year, we want to remind them that they’re not alone – which is why, led by Cllr Cheryl Barnard, we’re putting together Christmas hampers filled with gifts, treats, and everyday essentials to bring comfort and joy during the festive season. It’s a small but meaningful way to show these young adults that their community cares about them and believes in their future.
Workplaces, schools, and community groups can also get involved by hosting collection drives or sponsoring hampers — a wonderful way to share kindness as a team.
Your donation could be the difference between a lonely Christmas and one filled with hope.
Get ready for a magical festive season in Nottingham!
Cinderella at Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall brings the classic panto to life with sparkle, laughter, and glamour - expect laugh-out-loud comedy, dazzling scenery and a spectacular family night out.
At Wollaton Winter Light Trail the historic grounds have been transformed into a glowing wonderland of light and sound, complete with illuminated displays, festive bars, food stalls, marshmallow-toasting, funfair rides and immersive storytelling - perfect for a magical evening stroll.
Winter Wonderland at Old Market Square fills the air with seasonal cheer, including ice-skating, Observation Wheel, Christmas market stalls, cosy bars and street food.
Fairytale Christmas at Newstead Abbey invites visitors into the historic house decked with enchanting, fairytale-themed decorations, festive displays, craft stalls, and afternoon teas - a dreamy, storybook Christmas treat for families.
Residents and businesses are being invited to give their views on the future development of the Broad Marsh site.
Homes England, which bought the site from Nottingham City Council earlier this year, is currently developing plans and has launched a consultation which runs from now until Sunday 18 January 2026.
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a new city quarter with homes, jobs, green space, and better connections across Nottingham.
To support the consultation, Homes England has announced four pop-up events where members of the public can come along, discuss the project and share their views. These will be:
- Green Heart: Tuesday 9 December from noon to 1pm
- Green Heart: Friday 12 December from 1pm to 2pm
- Nottingham Central Library: Thursday 11 December from 3pm to 4pm
- Nottingham Central Library: Tuesday 16 December from 3pm to 4pm
