National is fixing the basics. We=E2=80=99ve mandated an hour a day of math=
s, reading, and writing, banned cell phones, stopped open-plan classrooms, =
and refreshed the curriculum.

Our reforms are delivering real results for students. In reading, 58% of ne=
w entrants are now meeting expectations, up from 36%, and 43% are exceeding=
expectations - more than double the Term 1 rate.

Today, I=E2=80=99m pleased to share new data shows our new approach to math=
s is working. Year 7-8 students who were behind on maths made 1-2 years=E2=
=80=99 progress in just 12 weeks.
