The longest government shutdown in U.S. history is poised to end this week, and after 43 days, Senate Democrats didn’t win a single meaningful protection from Trump’s dangerous cuts for families in America.

It’s clear that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer isn’t fit for the job of leading Senate Democrats in opposition to Trump’s destructive agenda.

Last week’s election results sent a clear message: voters rejected the direction in which Trump is steering this country. Yet despite resounding wins across the board, Schumer squandered the leverage that Democrats could have used to win real protections against Trump’s cruel agenda.

At stake were affordable healthcare for millions and No Kings protections against Trump’s planned overreach to rescind funding as he sees fit, even after it’s already been approved by Congress.

To make matters worse, not only did Schumer fail to lead Senate Democrats, he didn’t even join the latest negotiations that led to their downfall.* That isn’t leadership.

The spending bill fight will be back again in January, and when it is, funding for the Environmental Protection Agency, drinking water infrastructure, and lead pipe removal will be at stake. These funds are critical to improving drinking water safety and protecting the nearly nine million families in the U.S. who are exposed to lead – a dangerous neurotoxin – in their drinking water every single day.

In the fights ahead, Democrats need a leader in the Senate who is serious about standing up for our communities against Trump’s tyranny.
