Dear Friend,
This Veterans Day, we commemorate with solemn gratitude American service members and their commitment to our democracy.
A century ago, my mother’s grandparents arrived in Greater Boston, fleeing the pogroms in Ukraine just before World War I. They started a business and a family in Chelsea. Their son, my grandfather, joined the Marines after Pearl Harbor.
He believed in America – and America believed in him. He had no money, but he was sharp, and the Corps sent him to school to learn engineering and medicine. He went on to pioneer the development of the prosthetic limb.
Inspired by his story, I commissioned into the Marines after college. I commanded infantry in Afghanistan and a multi-national counter-narcotics training mission in Panama. [[link removed]]
Every veteran has a story. And every veteran swore an oath. That oath is to the Constitution, not to a president or a political party.
There is perhaps no tradition more important in the United States than a nonpartisan military. This president is eroding that convention. From parades in Washington to deployments in Los Angeles, he treats troops like political props.
This Veterans Day, in honor of all those who have sworn and served, join me in making your own pledge to the Constitution. We the people will uphold it against all threats to our democracy, foreign and domestic.
In Service,
Congressman Jake Auchincloss
