Fifty years ago today, on Nov. 10, 1975, a newspaper publisher named Nelson Poynter founded a school for journalists based on a belief that news organizations must never compromise on accuracy or the integrity of information to earn the public's trust.
The world has dramatically changed since 1975, but Mr. Poynter’s values remain steadfast. Words still matter. Facts still matter. Trustworthy news and information that helps you in your daily life still matters.
For 50 years, Poynter has become the journalism industry’s leader in helping news organizations improve their craft, leadership, and ethical practice. Today, as journalists face an unprecedented wave of financial and legal challenges, Poynter stands out – and stands up.
* Through our ownership of the Tampa Bay Times, we are a powerful advocate for quality local news.
* We've expanded our mission to be a global leader in upholding fact-based information through the Pulitzer-winning website PolitiFact and by creating the International Fact-Checking Network.
* Our MediaWise program helps citizens gain the power to sort out fact from fiction online for themselves.
And, as always, we remain a responsive resource to the news industry, through training and coaching and mentorship.
