A Landmark Election Night for LGBTQ+ Equality

In Virginia, Joshua Cole [[link removed]] and Lindsey Dougherty [[link removed]] secured crucial victories in the House of Delegates, helping expand one of the largest pro-equality majorities the state has seen in decades [[link removed]] . Their wins — along with several other endorsed candidates [[link removed]] — show that homophobia and transphobia didn’t stop voters from choosing progress [[link removed]] .
In Pennsylvania, Erica Deuso made history in Downingtown [[link removed]] , becoming one of the few out transgender mayors elected in the U.S and the first in Pennsylvania history [[link removed]] ! Her community-driven campaign proved once again that when trans people run, they win [[link removed]] .
Jim McGreevey (Jersey City Mayor) [[link removed]] , Alejandra Salinas (Houston City Council) [[link removed]] , and Thad Flowers (Atlanta City Council) [[link removed]] are all heading to runoffs — and will need strong support to get across the finish line in these potentially history-making races.
Ohio voters also elected several Victory Fund-endorsed candidates [[link removed]] , and dozens more LGBTQ+ leaders secured wins in local races across the country [[link removed]] , demonstrating the momentum of pro-equality leadership at every level of government.
And importantly, many pro-equality allies won their races despite escalating anti-trans attacks — a powerful reminder that voters across the nation are rejecting hate and embracing inclusive leadership [[link removed]] .
Redistricting Threat Paused — But Sharice Davids Could Face Another Fight in January
Kansas lawmakers have for now dropped their push to convene a special legislative session aimed at redrawing congressional maps to target Representative Davids [[link removed]] , after failing to secure enough support in the House to override a veto or call a session without the governor [[link removed]] .
That said, the fight isn’t over: leadership in the state Senate has already flagged redistricting as a “top priority” when the legislature reconvenes in January [[link removed]] , meaning another attempt may be just around the corner. Watch Rep. Davids’ update here [[link removed]] !
Supreme Court Poised to Decide Whether to Revisit Marriage Equality
Today the Supreme Court of the United States will decide whether to accept a petition asking them to review the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges [[link removed]] ruling that legalized marriage equality nationwide. The petition, led by Kim Davis — the former Kentucky clerk who became a conservative hero after refusing to issue marriage licenses to LGBTQ+ couples [[link removed]] — argues the decision was “egregiously wrong.”
Several states have submitted resolutions urging the Court revisit Obergefell . A decision on whether to hear the case could come early next week [[link removed]] .
