For the first time since 2017, famine has been declared — and now it’s happened twice this year. Just this week, the United Nations declared that the crisis in Sudan has reached the threshold of famine.

“We haven’t eaten in days.”

A phrase heard often in places impacted by famine.

Crops are withered and market shelves are bare as people cry out that someone — anyone — would help before it is too late.

This is what famine looks like.

Not just hunger. Not just scarcity. But complete collapse — when families have nothing left to eat and people begin to die.

When famine is declared, it’s not a warning — it’s confirmation that an entire community is already in crisis.
At least 20% of families have no food. 30% of children are acutely malnourished. And people are dying every day because help has not come fast enough.
