Americans who rely on an average of $187 per month to buy groceries,
that means trying to stretch $93 through November. That's $3 a
day. Maybe into December.

Payments won't arrive until today at the earliest. Many families may

SNAP recipients are bracing for fallout. One woman told reporters
that her apartment building houses veterans, seniors, and others on
disability support. "The entire building right now is in an uproar
because they don't know where they're going to get their
food from. We have the bread line across the street, but that's
only one meal a day."

Another mother frantically wondered whether her kids will have enough
food for the next month. "I'm going through every emotion
I can possibly go through, because I don't want my kids to be
without while I'm in here and I can't help."

Their experiences mirror what families are going through across the
nation. Parents calculating which meals their children will skip.
Seniors choosing between medications and food. Adults with
disabilities facing impossible decisions. All while waiting for

Food banks report they cannot absorb this crisis. For every meal a
food bank provides, SNAP provides nine. Even with 50% funding,
families face weeks without enough food. And there's no guarantee
benefits will return to full amounts in December.
