Three actions to protect SNAP benefits.

SNAP benefits are changing. Policy changes and budget cuts from HR1 mean that millions of people will lose program eligibility in the coming years. In the short term, the federal government shutdown means that starting on Nov. 1, people will not receive any SNAP benefits . SNAP helps around 11% of Washingtonians meet their basic need for nutritious food. It is urgent that state and federal representatives come together to maintain SNAP funding and keep families fed.

Here are three email actions you can take:

1) Email your federal representatives in Congress urging them to release emergency USDA funding for SNAP.
The USDA has a SNAP contingency fund that could cover November benefits. This fund has to be released by Congress, but would ensure that millions of people don't go hungry in November. Email your representatives now asking them to vote to release emergency USDA funds for SNAP!

2) Email Governor Ferguson urging him to support agency request legislation that will support lost SNAP funding in the coming years:
As we approach the 2026 legislative session, agencies are submitting the funding requests that they hope to have included in the supplemental budget. DSHS will be hit particularly hard by federal funding cuts, and is requesting $45.4M for 2026 and $572.6M for the next four years to maintain services to Washingtonians with less federal funding. This funding is necessary to prevent massive cuts to benefits in the coming years. Governor Ferguson must support this agency request during the coming legislative session.

3) Email Governor Ferguson urging him to pass progressive revenue this legislative session:
As more people turn to state run programs to help meet their basic needs, Washington will need to deal with the budget deficit and increased costs of administering and funding social services. This money cannot come from further program cuts. It's time for Washington to address its upside down tax code and pass progressive revenue that asks the ultra-wealthy to pay their fair share. Urge Governor Ferguson to support progressive revenue that will help all Washingtonians meet their basic needs!
