In a stunning admission, Justice Clarence Thomas said some of the Court’s most important decisions may have been nothing more than “something somebody dreamt up and others went along with.”
Now, for the first time, the Supreme Court is considering a petition explicitly asking them to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges — the 2015 ruling that guaranteed marriage rights to all. If they succeed, outdated marriage bans in more than half of U.S. states would snap back into effect overnight.
And it’s not just marriage equality under threat. The Court’s growing hostility toward LGBTQ+ rights is on full display — just this week, the Justices signaled skepticism toward Colorado’s ban on so-called “conversion therapy", creating a dangerous environment for LGBTQ+ kids.
