Email from Rep. Gonzales Government Shutdown Update At 12:00 AM on October 1, funding for the federal government expired, leading to a government shutdown. Though I voted to keep our government open on a bipartisan basis, legislation to extend government funding is stalled in the U.S. Senate. Congress' core responsibility is to deliver an annual budget, and failure to take action is completely unacceptable. Through my role on the House Appropriations Committee, I have worked hard all year to draft and pass 12 out of 12 funding bills to sustain our nation's funding priorities. I will continue urging my colleagues to get these bills signed into law and avoid further lapses in government funding. In the meantime, I understand the shutdown can be a challenge for families across TX-23. Please know that my offices will remain open, and we will continue to respond to your messages, emails, and phone calls. Please reach out to my San Antonio or Washington, D.C. phone number with any questions or concerns. VA Resources As a Navy veteran, I take issue knowing that the honorable men and women who have served our country may experience difficulties during the current government shutdown. If you or a loved one is a veteran and you require assistance with your benefits, please use my office as a resource. Additionally, the VA Contact Center will remain open at 1-800-698-2411. The Veterans Crisis Center will also be available 24/7 when you call 988. Working Toward a Screwworm Solution A screwworm case was detected less than 70 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Containing the screwworm is a national emergency that requires an all-hands-on-deck response. On Tuesday, I launched the New World Screwworm Working Group, consisting of federal and state lawmakers, various agricultural, livestock, and wild game associations, scientists, veterinary experts, and Texas farmers and ranchers. Together, we shared forward-thinking ideas, created an action plan, and collaborated on ways to prevent the spread of this dangerous parasite. I will continue working to bring experts together to find an effective solution to this national emergency. I will always fight for Texas agriculture. Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month October 2025 is Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month in Texas. Fentanyl is the leading killer of Americans between the ages of 18 and 49. It is fifty times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. A small dose is lethal. Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Department of State Health Services announced the launch of an online interactive map that pinpoints locations where Texans can access life-saving Naloxone (NARCAN), as part of the "One Pill Kills" campaign. It is important to continue raising awareness on the Fentanyl crisis and working together to save the lives of Texans and Americans. Follow @RepTonyGonzales on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
