Last week, the Trump administration’s US Dept. of Education (US ED) announced [[link removed]] a new MAGA-driven “patriotic education” curriculum [[link removed]] initiative that it plans to force into classrooms across America. Here’s what you need to know:
The Trump administration has launched a partisan “patriotic” education coalition that includes US ED and more than 40 partner groups, all of which are closely aligned with the president’s MAGA movement [[link removed]] — including Prager U, the Heritage Foundation, Moms for Liberty, Turning Point USA, America First Legal, Hillsdale College, ALEC, the Goldwater Institute, and more — to create civics programming for public schools across the nation. Many of these organizations are involved in efforts [[link removed]] to stop teaching civil rights material, oust school board members who believe in teaching social justice, ban books, and whitewash history lessons. In the US ED press release, Turning Point USA claimed to be “more resolved than ever to advance God-centered, virtuous education for students … to restore, revive, and reclaim robust American civics education for all students throughout our country.” This extremist civics takeover is paired with a renewed push to open Turning Point USA chapters in schools [[link removed]] across the US, with Oklahoma’s (now resigned) state superintendent calling for a mandate that every high school in the state open one [[link removed]] , and PACs offering students cash to open TPUSA chapters [[link removed]] .

All of this comes after Trump has cut billions in existing education grants [[link removed]] that include civics, as well as the arts, literacy, and higher education. The Trump administration has taken extraordinary measures to dismantle and shutter the Dept. of Education [[link removed]] over the past nine months, laying off half of the department’s staff and slashing funds for civil rights protection, teacher grants, special needs education, and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The administration is dismantling the parts of US ED it dislikes [[link removed]] , while using it in new ways to promote their own preferred partisan ideology and goals.
As Politico [[link removed]] notes, “It’s the latest in a string of the administration’s policy moves to influence the American education system, including withholding funding from universities [[link removed]] and K-12 schools [[link removed]] whose actions are deemed inconsistent with the administration’s values [[link removed]] . But this would be the first federal education program led by partisan organizations — unprecedented in the U.S. Education policy experts worry the initiative smacks of authoritarianism [[link removed]] — the federal government is prohibited by law [[link removed](title:20%20section:1232a%20edition:prelim)] from ‘any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum’ in schools.” The US ED says it will provide discretionary grants to schools that promote so-called “patriotic” education.

😡Federal Trump Budget Slashes Title I Funding: The US House Appropriations Committee voted to approve Trump’s federal 2026 budget bill, which includes massive, devastating cuts to local public schools [[link removed]] across the country.
Unlike the Senate version, which did not cut K-12 funding, the House version slashes $12 billion in school spending [[link removed]] (a 15% cut) — including $4.7 billion in cuts to Title I, [[link removed]] which funds the nation’s most vulnerable students, constituting a 27% cut to low-income students.
