Dear TLC Community,
Every young person deserves the freedom to learn about themselves and the identities of their peers. This June, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed S.B. 12 [[link removed]] into law, censoring what students can learn and discuss in schools. The law bans programs and education related to race, gender identity, and sexual orientation from pre-K through twelfth grade. This is unacceptable and we’re fighting back. [[link removed]]

The Transgender Law Center, ACLU of Texas, and Baker McKenzie have filed a federal lawsuit challenging S.B. 12 [[link removed]] on behalf of GSA Network, Students Engaged in Advancing Texas (SEAT), a teacher, and a student and her parent. They seek to stop the law because it violates constitutional rights.
S.B. 12 imposes a uniform political ideology across schools and silences the diversity that strengthens our communities. It prohibits activities like events celebrating Black, Latine, Asian, and Indigenous history; staff trainings on inclusion; and student groups like GSAs. The law even restricts after-school programs, field trips, informal guidance, and educators’ private speech. Schools must be safe spaces where all students are seen, supported, and celebrated. We oppose laws like S.B. 12 and advocate for environments that affirm every student's identity.
