Dear friend,

Hope you’ve had a chance for a well-earned break over these summer months.

Tragically, we know that people with severe mental illness face a 15-20 year shorter life expectancy – largely the result of poorer physical health. But they also face major barriers to the fitness activities which could reduce this gap. Our new research ([link removed]) sets out how we can overcome the barriers to tackle this injustice, and a blog from Hannah Moore ([link removed]) on her own experiences brings to life many of the report's findings.

As the Government introduces its vision of a Neighbourhood Health Service, we’re clear that this can only be achieved if mental health is at the heart of the model. We’ve set out how to make that a reality in our new resource ([link removed]) .

As ever, all of this work is only possible with your ongoing support. To help us in the fight for social justice in mental health, please consider donating today ([link removed]) .

Exercising our rights

Leisure centres, gyms and local councils need to do more to tackle the “invisible barriers” that stop people with mental health difficulties from accessing their services.

Exercising our rights, funded by Sport England and commisioned by Rethink Mental Illness, explores the obstacles which prevent people with mental health problems from having equal access to exercise opportunities, and evaluates programmes designed to overcome these barriers.

No Neighbourhood Health Without Mental Health

Our resource sets out how integrated neighbourhood teams can embed mental health support in the Government’s plans for a Neighbourhood Health Service.

The 10 Year Health Plan for England envisages that integrated neighbourhood teams will provide people with a full range of health services close to home. But for this model to succeed, it's essential that mental health support is fully embedded and enmeshed with physical health care.

Crisis and acute mental health care

Mental health crisis care saves lives. It’s an essential part of the mental health system. But too many people struggle to get timely support, and experiences of inpatient care can be re-traumatising.

Our new briefing examines research from the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Mental Health about the most effective ways of supporting people in a mental health crisis, and the reforms needed to deliver inpatient care which is timely, compassionate and effective.
