The Trump Administration is planning to rescind a longstanding EPA scientific directive declaring that greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare. That directive is the basis for safeguards that have helped keep our air and water clean and more investments in clean energy which have been creating jobs in rural communities and making our country more globally competitive with EVs and renewable energy.

Our elected leaders should share a commitment to protecting our planet — if we can’t promise future generations a liveable world, nothing else we do matters. Greenhouse gases are a main driver of climate change. The science is clear, and it shouldn’t be a matter up for political debate.

National Republicans claim they’re taking this step because taking climate change seriously could “bankrupt the country.” But that’s just not true.

During my time as Governor of North Carolina, we prioritized clean energy initiatives — and rather than harming our economy, our investment in the clean energy sector brought new businesses and good-paying jobs to our state.
