Last week, President Trump signed an executive order declaring a “crime emergency” in the District of Columbia— despite declining crime rates in the city.

He announced that the federal government would be taking control of the Metropolitan Police Department, deploying National Guard troops and reassigning federal law enforcement to patrol the city under the oversight of the Department of Justice.

This unprecedented use of federal power undercuts DC’s sovereignty, raises legitimate safety concerns and continues Trump’s alarming moves toward authoritarianism.

That’s why CREW filed expedited FOIA requests with ten federal agencies to find out how much taxpayers are paying for Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops and federal agents in DC and to determine which units within the agencies were reassigned to prioritize the DC takeover. And we’re demanding answers on whether the agents were trained for this and any memos about the legality of the takeover.

The people of DC—and all Americans—deserve answers. CREW is committed to holding Trump accountable to the rule of law. This is a tough fight, and we can’t do it alone. Please donate today to support CREW for accountability and transparency → [[link removed]]

Following Trump’s takeover in DC, leaders in the city have been fighting back against his unprecedented show of force.

DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed an emergency lawsuit challenging the attempted takeover of MPD, calling it “the gravest threat to Home Rule that the District has ever faced.”

In a declaration in the case, MPD Chief Pamela Smith said she had “never seen a single government action that would cause a greater threat to law and order than this dangerous directive.”

But Trump is only getting more brazen. In the coming days, National Guard troops are preparing to carry weapons—further intensifying safety concerns. And now at least six states are sending their National Guards to DC.

This is a serious problem for DC’s self governance, but it’s just a warning of what is to come elsewhere if there is not significant public outcry.

It’s also astonishingly hypocritical: the Trump administration has made substantial cuts to public funding of government agencies and social services in the name of efficiency, but now it’s mobilizing federal agents to patrol DC for no clear reason other than intimidation.

The public has a right to know how much Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops and federal agents in DC will cost and which units within the agencies were reassigned to prioritize the takeover.

CREW is fighting to give the public the answers they deserve, and won’t back down until we uncover the truth and hold the Trump administration accountable.
