![]() John,
Following Trump’s takeover in DC, leaders in the city have been fighting back against his unprecedented show of force. DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed an emergency lawsuit challenging the attempted takeover of MPD, calling it “the gravest threat to Home Rule that the District has ever faced.” In a declaration in the case, MPD Chief Pamela Smith said she had “never seen a single government action that would cause a greater threat to law and order than this dangerous directive.” But Trump is only getting more brazen. In the coming days, National Guard troops are preparing to carry weapons—further intensifying safety concerns. And now at least six states are sending their National Guards to DC. This is a serious problem for DC’s self governance, but it’s just a warning of what is to come elsewhere if there is not significant public outcry. It’s also astonishingly hypocritical: the Trump administration has made substantial cuts to public funding of government agencies and social services in the name of efficiency, but now it’s mobilizing federal agents to patrol DC for no clear reason other than intimidation. The public has a right to know how much Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops and federal agents in DC will cost and which units within the agencies were reassigned to prioritize the takeover.
