Slate: The Supreme Court Is Determined to Turn Voting Into a Limited Privilege [[link removed]]
At Voter Action Project, John, we believe that voting is a fundamental right , not a privilege or some test of everyone's endurance and ability to wait in a long line. We believe that our right to vote is the core bedrock that makes up our democracy and needs to be defended, expanded, and celebrated.
However, as the Voting Rights Act -- a historic piece of legislation that stood for voting as a fundamental right for every American -- recently turned 60 years old, it is being eviscerated to stop voters and their lawyers from defending that freedom to vote in court.
Conservatives on the United States Supreme Court have spent the last two decades slowly tearing the VRA to pieces. In the hands of opponents of voting rights, the Voting Rights Act has faced death by a thousand cuts. Some of those cuts have been small, such as limiting how courts consider challenges brought under the law. And some have been large, as in the 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder that ended the requirement for certain states with histories of discrimination to submit election changes and district maps to the Department of Justice for approval.
As the Supreme Court holds over another case, hell-bent on dismantling the Voting Rights Act piece by piece, we have to fight to protect our fundamental rights.

Doubt us? The U.S. Supreme Court is now set to hear oral argument in Callais v. Landry — the high-stakes Louisiana redistricting case that could upend the Voting Rights Act — on October 15.
This will be the second time the nation’s highest court hears oral argument in the pivotal voting rights case. This fall, the argument will focus on whether Louisiana’s creation of a second majority-minorty district under the VRA violates the U.S. Constitution.
This is a key opportunity for Chief Justice John Roberts, who has taken every opportunity since being appointed to the court by President George W. Bush to destroy the VRA. This case could take out one of the last legs holding the law up in favor of equality and our fundamental right to have our voice heard in an election.
Over the last two decades, as the Supreme Court dismantled the VRA case by case, voter suppression has evolved. It’s been built on paperwork, confusion, inconvenience, and ever-changing rules. That’s not how it should be. We need to put justice back in reach for those who need it most.
Please, fuel our work to stop them with $25 or whatever you can today and defend our fundamental right to vote >> [[link removed]]

Integrity First Voter Action Project is dedicated to expanding ballot access and increasing voter participation across the country.
Since the Supreme Court gutted key provisions in the Voting Rights Act, extreme politicians have taken advantage to pass harsh laws that restrict access to the ballot box. These restrictions particularly affect disadvantaged communities and people of color. It’s our goal to bring awareness to these laws wherever they may crop up and organize voters to take action to ensure the right to vote is available to everyone in their states and communities.
