At Voter Action Project, John, we believe that voting is a fundamental right, not a privilege or some test of everyone's endurance and ability to wait in a long line. We believe that our right to vote is the core bedrock that makes up our democracy and needs to be defended, expanded, and celebrated.
However, as the Voting Rights Act -- a historic piece of legislation that stood for voting as a fundamental right for every American -- recently turned 60 years old, it is being eviscerated to stop voters and their lawyers from defending that freedom to vote in court.
Conservatives on the United States Supreme Court have spent the last two decades slowly tearing the VRA to pieces. In the hands of opponents of voting rights, the Voting Rights Act has faced death by a thousand cuts. Some of those cuts have been small, such as limiting how courts consider challenges brought under the law. And some have been large, as in the 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder that ended the requirement for certain states with histories of discrimination to submit election changes and district maps to the Department of Justice for approval.
As the Supreme Court holds over another case, hell-bent on dismantling the Voting Rights Act piece by piece, we have to fight to protect our fundamental rights.
