Hey John -
Thank you to everyone who attended our town hall with Takis Karantonis [[link removed]] this past Tuesday. Reminder to request your absentee ballot [[link removed]] for the July 7th Special Election to vote for Takis by June 30th at 5pm or vote absentee-in-person [[link removed]] before July 7th!
June is Pride Month and Arlington Young Dems would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the history of the celebration. We typically celebrate Pride with beautiful parades and joyous gatherings; however, we should remember that its history stems from a protest led by queer people of color--such as Marsha P. Johnson [[link removed]] , Sylvia Rivera [[link removed]] , and Stormé DeLarverie [[link removed]] --against police brutality. The Stonewall Riots [[link removed]] began on June 28th, 1969 when police officers raided Stonewall Inn--a popular gay club in New York City--leading to riots and protests due to incessant police harassment and the biased targeting of gay clubs. This historic event would act as a catalyst that propelled the movement forward and led to the formation of the Gay Liberation Front and additional gay, lesbian, and bisexual civil rights organizations. The following year, the first official gay pride parade set off from the Stonewall Inn and continued through New York City. June was later designated LGBTQ+ Pride Month to commemorate the uprising.
AYD stands with the LGBTQ+ community and wants everyone to remember to continue to fight for equity and justice. We hope you join us for a screening of Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen [[link removed]] tonight at 7 pm to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Happy Pride Month!
