History behind Pride and reminder to request absentee ballots by Tuesday, June 30th!
Arlington Young Dems

Hey John -

Thank you to everyone who attended our town hall with Takis Karantonis this past Tuesday. Reminder to request your absentee ballot for the July 7th Special Election to vote for Takis by June 30th at 5pm or vote absentee-in-person before July 7th!

June is Pride Month and Arlington Young Dems would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the history of the celebration. We typically celebrate Pride with beautiful parades and joyous gatherings; however, we should remember that its history stems from a protest led by queer people of color--such as Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Stormé DeLarverie--against police brutality. The Stonewall Riots began on June 28th, 1969 when police officers raided Stonewall Inn--a popular gay club in New York City--leading to riots and protests due to incessant police harassment and the biased targeting of gay clubs. This historic event would act as a catalyst that propelled the movement forward and led to the formation of the Gay Liberation Front and additional gay, lesbian, and bisexual civil rights organizations. The following year, the first official gay pride parade set off from the Stonewall Inn and continued through New York City. June was later designated LGBTQ+ Pride Month to commemorate the uprising.

AYD stands with the LGBTQ+ community and wants everyone to remember to continue to fight for equity and justice. We hope you join us for a screening of Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen tonight at 7 pm to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Happy Pride Month!

Here are this week’s upcoming events, our AYD Resource Guide: Challenge Racial Injustice, and additional important information.

AYD Netflix Party: Disclosure

In honor of Pride Month, join us on the 51st anniversary of the beginning of Stonewall, Sunday, June 28th at 7 pm for AYD Netflix Party: Disclosure. The party link will be posted at 6:50 pm beforehand!

Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen is a 2020 American documentary film, directed and produced by Sam Feder. The film follows an in-depth look at Hollywood's depiction of transgender people and the impact of their stories on transgender lives and American culture.

We will also have a Google Meet video chat where we can live troubleshoot issues people may have and to add a video component for those who want that option.

I encourage you all to join the AYD Campaigns Slack using the button below, even if you are unable to attend tonight.

Questions? Email our campaigns director, Ian White, at [email protected]

AYD Resource Guide: Challenge Racial Injustice

AYD has created a challenge racial injustice resource guide. While protesting in person is not an option for everyone, you can contact representatives, sign petitions, make donations, get out the vote, and consume anti-racist media as actionable alternatives. If you would like to participate in in-person civic engagement, contact Dan Goldberg at (610) 457-0591.

If you have any questions or would like to join our Diversity & Inclusion Committee, please contact AYD Secretary and D&I Chair Maya Jones at [email protected].
