John,

Our democracy is in crisis, and we need to act now. The fight for democracy is the fight for gun violence prevention.

We can’t prevent gun violence until we can ensure everyone can fairly participate in our democracy. And unfortunately, access to our democractic process remains inaccessible to many Americans. You likely saw the headlines about the primary elections in Georgia and Kentucky — the endless polling lines, the voters begging to cast their ballots. Racist and discriminatory voter suppression is rampant.

We're teaming up with March For Our Lives to launch a campaign called #VotingAccessSavesLives.

We believe that if we want to strengthen our nation’s gun laws and save lives, then we must unite to support civil rights advocates in dismantling systemic barriers to voting.  We need Americans everywhere to become frontline advocates to ensure that all citizens — especially historically suppressed Black American voters — have the opportunity to vote.

Our campaign will equip YOU with tools and resources to fight for our crucial reforms in your state and hometown. We’re launching soon, and we need you on our side. Sign up now to be the first to receive our resources and toolkit!

Watch Our New End Family Fire PSA with the Ad Council!

Last week we recognized ASK Day [[link removed]] , a time when we remind parents, guardians, and caretakers to ask about unlocked guns in the home. To coincide with ASK Day, we released our new PSA, "Safe Storage Saves Lives" alongside the Ad Council and our End Family Fire program.

Our new PSA encourages gun owners to practice safe firearm storage. This message is more important than ever right now, as children are out of school and cities reopening means many kids will start visiting other homes again. By practicing safe gun storage, we can End Family Fire [[link removed]] , which is a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun in the home that results in death or injury. Watch and share our new PSA .

House of Representatives Passes the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020

The systemic murders of Black men and women underscore the urgent need for solutions to eliminate police violence and empower our communities. We are proud to see the House pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020. This legislation reforms policing tactics, mandates transparency, and facilitates accountability to address the various aspects that enable and protect police violence. Our policing systems are broken and unjust, and this legislation is a step in the right direction towards a path of wholesale change. Read more [[link removed]] .

House of Representatives Pass a Bill to Make Washington, D.C., the 51st State

Yesterday, the House advanced legislation to the Senate for D.C. statehood for the first time in our nation's history. This is historic progress! On average, a person in Washington, D.C., is killed with a gun every three days. Yet without representation in Congress, the district's 700,000 residents have no power to pass common-sense gun safety laws — and the NRA has repeatedly fought off D.C. gun laws. We are proud to partner with 51 for 51 in the fight for D.C. statehood. Next step is passing it through [[link removed]] the U.S. Senate. Read more now.

🎧 "Stand Your Ground” Laws, Culture, and What it Means
So-called “ Stand Your Ground” laws [[link removed]] legally allow a person to use a firearm to shoot and kill another person, at any time. They were thrust into the national spotlight after the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and continue to be controversial. We talk with Dr. Caroline Light , an author and historian whose work focuses on America’s obsession with violent self-defense and the dangerous myth of “good guys with guns.”

Brady Donor of the Week: Kath Tsakalakis

Kath Tsakalakis became involved in gun violence prevention after sitting in on a school board meeting and learning about lockdown drills. As a British immigrant to the U.S., Kath was surprised that it took her nearly 15 years to “wake up to gun violence.” Kath supports Brady “because of the mission, strategic focus on practical initiatives, and the can-do approach.”

Kath finds hope in the fact that — even though Mitch McConnell refuses to act — poll after poll shows that the overwhelming majority of Americans support background checks on gun sales. As she puts it, “since when do 90% of Americans agree on anything?” She believes Americans are becoming increasingly aware of the likelihood that a gun in the home is more likely to be used in suicide or unintentionally than in self-defense. Brady Quote of the Week

"Once again the U.S. House of Representatives of the 116th Congress has taken action to address the concerns and needs of the American people. Passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020 is a significant step towards preventing unjust, and potentially lethal, practices within policing. Though activists have demanded radical change to policing for years, for many across the country the events of the past month have shown why this bill is important and is a needed step forward."
