Pssst big news here‼️

John,

We have a BIG announcement. And it's based upon this fact: that we can’t prevent gun violence until we can ensure everyone can fairly participate in our democracy. But unfortunately, access to our democratic process remains inaccessible to many Americans. It's no accident that the communities most affected by gun violence — namely Black and Latinx communities — face the greatest barriers to the ballot box. Enough is enough.

We're teaming up with March For Our Lives to launch a campaign to ensure access to the polls as we head into November.

We believe that if we want to strengthen our nation’s gun laws and save lives, then we must unite to support civil rights advocates in dismantling systemic barriers to voting. This is urgent. With November approaching, we need Americans everywhere to become frontline advocates to ensure that all citizens — especially historically suppressed Black American voters — have the opportunity to vote.

Watch Our New "End Family Fire" PSA with the Ad Council!

Last week we recognized ASK Day, when we remind parents, guardians, and caretakers to always ask about unlocked guns in the home. To coincide with ASK Day, we released our new PSA, "Safe Storage Saves Lives," alongside the Ad Council and our End Family Fire program.

Our new PSA encourages gun owners to practice safe firearm storage. This message is more important than ever right now: Children are out of school and more cities reopening means many kids will start visiting other homes again. By practicing safe gun storage, we can End Family Fire, which is a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun in the home that results in death or injury.

If we can convince just one family to safely store their firearms and avoid a tragedy, then it’s worth it. Watch and share our new PSA now!

VICTORY: House of Representatives Passes the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020

Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and countless others. We must honor them with action.

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020. This vital legislation reforms policing tactics, mandates transparency, and facilitates accountability to address the various aspects that enable and protect police violence. This is a significant step towards preventing unjust and lethal practices within policing. Now, the Senate must pass this bill. Read more.

VICTORY: House of Representatives Passes D.C. Statehood

Yesterday, the House advanced legislation for D.C. statehood. This is historic progress! On average, a person in Washington, D.C., is killed with a gun every three days. Yet without representation in Congress, the district's 700,000 residents — most of whom are Black and Brown — have no power to pass common-sense gun safety laws. D.C. residents have waited over 200 years for equal representation in Congress. Now, the Senate must pass D.C. Statehood with 51 votes because #WeCantWait for equity and representation.

🎧 "Stand Your Ground” Laws, Culture, and What it Means
So-called “Stand Your Ground” laws legally allow a person to use a firearm to shoot and kill another person, at any time. They were thrust into the national spotlight after the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and continue to be controversial. We talk with Dr. Caroline Light, an author and historian whose work focuses on America’s obsession with violent self-defense and the dangerous myth of “good guys with guns.”

🎧 Gun Violence and the Murder of Black Trans Women
In 2020 alone, at least 16 transgender or gender non-conforming people have been fatally shot or killed by other violent means. JJ is joined by Imara Jones, writer, activist, and creator of TransLash to talk more about the murders of Black trans women.

Brady Donor of the Week: Kath Tsakalakis

Kath Tsakalakis became involved in gun violence prevention after sitting in on a school board meeting and learning about lockdown drills. As a British immigrant to the U.S., Kath was surprised that it took her nearly 15 years to “wake up to gun violence.” Kath supports Brady “because of the mission, strategic focus on practical initiatives, and the can-do approach.”

Kath finds hope in the fact that — even though Mitch McConnell refuses to act — poll after poll shows that the overwhelming majority of Americans support  background checks on gun sales. As she puts it, “since when do 90% of Americans agree on anything?” She believes Americans are becoming increasingly aware of the likelihood that a gun in the home is more likely to be used in suicide or unintentionally than in self-defense. Read Kath's full donor profile!

America’s Gun Violence Epidemic is Inextricably Linked to Police Violence, Fast Company

This week, Alexandria became the first city in Virginia to prohibit firearms at public events and on city property.

This is what true leadership looks like, and it’s a major step forward in making Virginia a safer state. This accomplishment was made possible thanks to a unanimous vote by the Alexandria City Council. Please send a tweet thanking the city council members:

This is leadership in action! Thank you to @justindotnet and Alexandria City Council members @ElizabethForALX, @chapman4council, @AmyJacksonVA, @MoSeifeldein, @CanekForCouncil & @DelPepper for being gun safety champions! #VaLeg #EndGunViolence

"Once again the U.S. House of Representatives of the 116th Congress has taken action to address the concerns and needs of the American people. Passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020 is a significant step towards preventing unjust, and potentially lethal, practices within policing. Though activists have demanded radical change to policing for years, for many across the country the events of the past month have shown why this bill is important and is a needed step forward."
