Trump is following a strategy used by dictators and kings throughout history: Mobilize the National Guard to carry out your political agenda.

First, he sent the Guard to Los Angeles against the wishes of local officials so he could make a big show of cracking down on anti-ICE protests.

Now, Trump’s sending the Guard into DC, along with other federal law enforcement, to confront an “emergency” he invented. He’s even grabbing control of D.C’s local police force for himself.

Let’s be clear: this is an authoritarian takeover of our nation’s capital. And already he is threatening to do this to other cities across the country.

But here’s what Trump doesn’t get – America doesn’t do kings. We do democracy. And the movement to stop his wannabe-dictatorship is growing stronger every day.

His approval numbers are sinking, protests are growing, and progressives like myself (and you, Zakaria!) are laying the groundwork to defeat the far-right GOP in the midterms.

So, if you want to send a message to Trump today that we won’t be intimidated by his authoritarian takeovers:

Chip in $5 or whatever you can afford today to support our movement against Trump’s lawless presidency and the Republicans in Congress who enable him. Trump’s latest move is a sign of what’s to come over the next 3 and a half years if a strong majority of Americans fail to rise up in opposition.
