Anglicans and the American Revolution

THE REFORMED EPISCOPAL SEMINARY
PHILADEPHIA, PA
The year 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution in 1775. One interesting aspect of the war is the position of Anglicanism and the Anglican clergy. For Anglicans, the revolt against the Crown was, in fact, a rebellion against the “the Supreme Governor” of the church.

This symposium ([link removed]) will explore the impact of the Revolution on Anglicanism in the colonies, as well as in Great Britain.
A Call For Papers ()
Papers are invited on topics such as (but not limited to):
* the role of Anglicans in the Revolution
* the impact of the Revolution on Anglican ecclesiology
* relations between the “mother church” and the colonial churches
* the creation of the Protestant Episcopal Church
* worship and the Book of Common Prayer
* impacts on Anglicanism in “Greater Britain”
* establishment and freedom of religion in the new nation

We welcome submissions from scholars in religion, history, politics, sociology, law, and other related disciplines.

About The Conference ()
The conference ([link removed]) will be held on the campus of the Reformed Episcopal Seminary on September 26, 2025.

Participants will be expected to bear the costs of travel and lodging, but meals during the conference will be provided at RES.

We invite proposals for individual papers or panels. If submitting a panel proposal, please provide a full list of the participants and their academic affiliations (if any).

Papers from the conference will be published in a peer-reviewed special-edited collection ready for July 2026. Further details on publisher and timeline are forthcoming.
