Dear friend,

It has been another busy month here at the Centre, as we launched a new resource for our Mentally Healthier Councils Network to celebrate and support the work local councils are doing to boost mental health in their communities.

We also released a joint statement ([link removed]) with the Prison Advice and Care Trust, calling for investment in better mental health support for people in the criminal justice system.

Following the UK Supreme Court ruling on how a person’s sex is defined under the 2010 Equality Act, we’ve raised our concerns ([link removed]) about the serious implications for the mental health of trans and non-binary people resulting from both the ruling and the updated code of practice.

The Government's ten-year health plan ([link removed]) was released in early July. Despite some positive proposals to improve care, we are disappointed that it falls short of the vision and commitment that is much needed to transform the nation's mental health. With the latest data ([link removed]) confirming that the nation’s mental health has got significantly poorer over the last decade, we need bold action to turn this around.

Mentally Healthier Councils Network

Through the Mentally Healthier Councils Network, we're supporting local authorities to champion mental health and contribute to creating mentally healthier communities.

This month we launched an online resource highlighting initiatives, policies and actions from local councils across England to benefit people’s mental health.

Has your council implemented initiatives to boost mental health? We’d love to hear about them! ([link removed])

Mental health support for people in the criminal justice system

Prisons are facing a mounting mental health crisis. Rates of self-harm have trebled in the last decade, and too many unwell prisoners face long waits for transfer to hospital.

Alongside the Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact), we published a policy paper, calling on the Government to consider how public funds could be used differently to make prisons safer, and to improve community mental health care for people in the criminal justice system.
