New Briefing: The Burmese Military’s ‘Elections’: New Date, New Danger, Same Sham
Dear John
We have just published a new briefing on the ‘elections’ that the Burmese military are planning to hold at the end of the year.
The elections will clearly be a sham and probably rejected as such by many countries, but the military won’t really care about that. They are hoping for a repeat of what happened after their elections in 2010. Those elections were widely rejected as a sham in the country and internationally.
However, in less than two years, the international community had lifted sanctions and was offering support to the regime it had previously described as illegitimate.

The international community must learn from the mistakes of the past and recognise that the Burmese military can never reform and can never be part of a long-term solution to bring peace, justice and democracy to Burma.
Burma is a complex multi-ethnic, multi-religious country. Any attempt to try and impose a simple, single central state system on the country is doomed to fail. It has already been tried and failed.
Instead, the international community must support a process led by the people, a process that is already happening with some of the new administrations being set up in areas freed from Burmese military control, a Burma built on the achievements and aspirations of the people.
