New Briefing: The Burmese Military’s ‘Elections’: New Date, New Danger, Same Sham
Dear John
We have just published a new briefing on the ‘elections’ that the Burmese military are planning to hold at the end of the year.
The elections will clearly be a sham and probably rejected as such by many countries, but the military won’t really care about that. They are hoping for a repeat of what happened after their elections in 2010. Those elections were widely rejected as a sham in the country and internationally.
However, in less than two years, the international community had lifted sanctions and was offering support to the regime it had previously described as illegitimate.
