The right to vote is the promise of our democracy. But in 2013, the Supreme Court rolled back key provisions in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In the wake of that ruling, undemocratic and outrageous voter suppression laws have sprung up in states across the country.

We’ve taken action here in Richmond to make voting easier, making election day a holiday and providing free rides to the polls, but across the country, thousands of voters are being purged from voter rolls. Polling stations are closing down in Black and brown communities. In Kentucky's primary this week, only 170 polling stations were left standing out of an original 3,500+. These acts of voter suppression are happening everywhere, and Mayor Stoney is fighting back, including sounding the alarm for a universal vote-by-mail system ([link removed]).

This week is the anniversary of House Democrats introducing the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015 (VRAA). This historic legislation will strengthen the Voting Rights Act while expanding access to the ballot box for eligible voters.
