The right to vote is the promise of our democracy. But in 2013, the Supreme Court rolled back key provisions in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In the wake of that ruling, undemocratic and outrageous voter suppression laws have sprung up in states across the country.
We've taken action here in Richmond to make voting easier, making election day a holiday and providing free rides to the polls, but across the country, thousands of voters are being purged from voter rolls. Polling stations are closing down in Black and brown communities. In Kentucky's primary this week, only 170 polling stations were left standing out of an original 3,500+. These acts of voter suppression are happening everywhere, and Mayor Stoney is fighting back, including sounding the alarm for a universal vote-by-mail system.
This week is the anniversary of House Democrats introducing the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015 (VRAA). This historic legislation will strengthen the Voting Rights Act while expanding access to the ballot box for eligible voters.
As Mayor of Richmond, Mayor Levar Stoney is committed to fighting for stronger protections for voters. If you’re with him in this work, add your name next to his to call on the Senate to bring the VRAA to a vote.
Mayor Stoney has dedicated his career to fighting for voting rights. When Mayor Stoney served as Governor Terry McAuliffe’s Secretary of the Commonwealth, he worked to restore civil and voting rights to more than 150,000 disenfranchised Virginians. But the work isn't over - we need action at the federal level.
The COVID-19 crisis has introduced further barriers to the ballot box, so we need leaders to act now to secure protections before November. Add your name today to join the Mayor in demanding the Senate hold a vote on the VRAA.
Thank you,
Team Stoney
